So, packing just my small backpack I left Malta for 4 days to visit Marseilles and Lyon. They are the 2nd a 3rd largest cities in France.

It was my first time in France and since it was a direct flight to Marseilles in the morning, I planned to stay for pretty much a day in Marseilles and then head to Lyon as in the weekend I was attending an event.

But…

I was also excited for another thing that I was going to catch up with some friends that come from all over Europe and most of all was going to catch up with one of my French friends that I haven’t seen for 15 years (when I used to work as an apprentice chef in Scotland).

So arriving in Marseilles as I do always I planned a bit what are some places I needed to visit while I am there and the two most important places I had on my list where the Notre Dame and the Old Port.

After a short 20 min bus shuttle from the airport to Marseilles bus/train station, I walked towards the Old port.

Although it was pretty cold the sun was out.

At first since it was around 11.30am that I arrived at the Old port, it wasn’t hectic, I went alongside the port snapping pictures with my small camera and my small trusty pocket tripod.

On the way I have stumbled into a nice couple from Spain before I headed to the MUCEM which is a piece of art in itself. (sadly it was closed that day).

After that I went to grab some lunch before I headed towards the Basilique de Notre Dame.

It wasn’t an easy task to walk it there because it is very steep and an uphill battle but I love walking and to challenge myself.

If you hate walking get a touristy cab or something from the old port.

When I arrived on the top of the hill, all the walking pain stops as the view healed and made me forget everything else.

What a view…

I was thinking to myself how the heck they managed to built this without machines in 1864.

Can you imagine?!?

Inside there is certain calmness and good vibes and I loved that too.

If you are going to Marseilles… a must visit.

Time flew by and I needed to get going as I head to get the bus to Lyon with Flixbus. (The first time I was using their service)

The trip from Marseille to Lyon costed me Eur13 and since I had my direct flight to Malta from Marseilles, I used Flixbus again to get back which was the same price.

Arrived in Lyon late evening and met some of my friends there before we went to sleep as the next day we had the event which was amazing.

On Sunday we headed out to check out Lyon for a while.

Since it was Sunday it was busy.

We first went to see the La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière which one can access through the cable car or by walk.

When we arrived there there was a lot of Myst there so we could not see the city below us but we met with some cool friends from Romania that are part of out travel community and we took some pictures together.

After lunch…

We went back to the hotel as it was time to pack and head back home.

All in all it was a very packed bizcation trip and an exciting one indeed.

Both cities are worth a visit and I am sure I will go back sometime to indulge more especially when it comes to the french cuisine. 🙂

Here is my travel bite of Marseilles and Lyon…
